Flash WAY back Friday

Yesterday we went to the Pioneer Day Parade here in Salt Lake with Fred. I was surprised that he didn't know that some of our ancestors came across the plains in the Martin Handcart Company. Then I realized many in the family don't know which of our ancestors were pioneers and when they crossed the plains. By the way, to be considered a "pioneer" they had to have arrived in Utah before the railroad in 1869.

Daniel Spencer/Perrigrine Sessions Company - arrived 24 September 1847

Brigham Young Company - arrived 20 September 1848

Warren Foote Company - arrived 17 September 1850

John G. Smith Company - arrived September 1851

Uriah Curtis Company - arrived 1 October 1852

John B. Walker Company - 2 October 1852

Also in the company were Mary's parents, William Champlin, 58 and Mary Ring Champlin, 58, as well as Stewart's father, John Dickson, 71. His mother, Mary Henderson Dickson died in Iowa.

Robert L. Campbell Company - arrived 28 October 1854
William and Sarah traveled all the way from England to Utah together, but they didn't marry until seven months later, 13 May 1855.

Unidentified Company - arrived 1855

James traveled to Utah a year ahead of his family so he could have a home ready for them when they arrived. His daughter, Mary Anne, crossed the ocean with the family to America but returned to England. His son, Joseph, died in Wyoming several days before the rescue parties found the group.

James Willie Handcart Company - arrived 9 November 1856

John and MaryAnn's 17 year old daughter, Eliza died of cholera while traveling to Utah.

Martin Handcart Company - arrived 30 November 1856

Sarah arrived with her mother, Mary Jarvis Crossley, 45, and her sisters. Her brother, Joseph died in Wyoming a few days before the company was trapped in Martin's Cove.

Ansel P. Harmon Company - arrived 5 October 1862

Unidentified Company - arrived 1863
Mary Ann Toms Holt, 64 and Robert Holt, 60. (No pictures)
People born in Utah before the railroad arrived are considered "Native Pioneers"

What my iTunes say about me....

Several months ago Christa had a post titled "What my iTunes say about me"
Here's how this works... take your ipod, MP3 player, iTunes, or whatever and set it to shuffle. The first song you come to is the answer to the first question on this list and so on. Don't cheat! You can make pretty much anything work.

I think this is more accurate than any fortune teller. Most of my songs are pretty old so I included the word. I especially like the song for my funeral, maybe I really should have it sung.

Of course everyone is tagged on this :)

How does the world see me?
Amor, Amor, Amor - Dean Martin

Amor, amor, amor,
This word so sweet that I repeat
Means I have adored you
Amor, amor my love
Will you deny this heart that I have placed before you

Will I have a happy life?
Angel Baby - Dean Martin

Angel baby you're mine forever
Angel baby, you angel baby you
Who is the dream who starts me dreaming
Angel baby
Then keeps me worrying and schemeing
You, angel baby, you

What do my friends really think of me?
Ave Maria - Charlotte Church

Hail Mary, Full of Grace

Do people secretly lust after me?
Simple - K.D. Lang

Flawless light in a darkening air
Alone...and shining there
Love will not elude you
Love is simple
I worship this tenacity
And the beautiful struggle we’re in
Love will not elude us
Love is simple
Be sure to know that

How can I make myself happy?
Bitter Pill - Annie Lennox

Bitter pill to swallow
Slidin' down my throat
Bitter pill to swallow
How it makes me choke
How the hell am I gonna find
Happiness and peace of mind
When I'm losin' all the time?
Yes... bitter

What should I do with my life?
Don't Fence Me In -Bing Crosby

Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above,
Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don't fence me in.
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees,
Send me off forever but I ask you please,
Don't fence me in.

Will I ever have children?
Erased - Annie Lennox

I'm gonna put it all behind me
Like nothing ever happened between us
Nothing ever took place between you and me...
Yes Nothin' ever happened

What is some good advice for me?
Everybody Loves Somebody - Dean Martin

Everybody loves somebody sometime
Everybody falls in love somehow
Something in your kiss just told me
That sometime is now

How will I be remembered?
Hallelujah - K.D. Lang

I heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
You don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

What is my signature dance song?
Helpless - K.D. Lang

Helpless, helpless, helpless
Baby can you hear me now?
The chains are locked
and tied across the door,
Baby, sing with me somehow.

What do I think my current theme song is?
I Can't begin to tell you - Bing Cosby

I can't begin to tell you
How much you mean to me
My world would end
If ever we were through
I can't begin to tell you
How happy I would be
If I could speak my mind
Like others do
I make such pretty speeches
Whenever we're apart
But when your'e near
The words I choose
Refues to leave my heart.

What song will play at my funeral?
Moonlight Becomes You - Bing Cosby

Moonlight becomes you, it goes with your hair
You certainly know the right thing to wear
Moonlight becomes you, I'm thrilled at the sight
And I could get so romantic tonight
You're all dressed up to go dreaming
Now don't tell me I'm wrong
And what a night to go dreaming
Mind if I tag along

What type of men do I like?
If I Could Be With You Now - Dean Nolan and Bobby Joyner

All my life I've looked for angels
All this time I've searched for signs
Now I've turned a corner
You're standing before me
You’re not what I thought I might find

What is my day going to be like?
Jumpin' at the Woodside - Count Basie

4th of July Movie

We had a great Independence Day picnic and fireworks display at Casey's house. Lance couldn't make it because he was still recuperating from having the varicose veins ripped out of his left leg. I made a movie so he could see the basics of the day. (None of the Harpers/Startups/Gallegos will see it because they all agree blogs are just "so much useless drivel") By the way, certain portions of this video were edited out to protect the shaky reputation of a particular senior member of the Startup family.

Happy Birthday and Flash-back Friday

Happy Birthday to our two great-nephews (or is it grand-nephews?)
Isaac Woodstein, born 2 July 2006

and Levi Goldbury, born 4 July 2006.

Also, what could be better for "Flash-Back Friday" than Casey setting off his fireworks last year?

I'm sure there will be more pictures of Casey and his fireworks tomorrow.
Happy Independence Day!

Varicose Veins

I just got back from dropping Lance off at the hospital to have the varicose veins removed from his left leg. They were supposed to have been removed a couple of weeks ago but a blood clot formed in his right leg after having the veins removed so the doctor made him wait until the clot was gone. He didn't go to work for two weeks because the doctor didn't want him sitting for long periods of time. It's a big bummer he had to wait so long because now he will miss all the Independence Day celebrations :(

I'm really hoping the doctor is more competent than his receptionist. She was supposed to leave a message yesterday telling Lance what time his surgery was scheduled for. When I got home from work I saw she had called several times but never left a message. I called the office and she said, "I've been calling your house but every time I got an answering machine that kept saying 'please leave a message.'" Duhhhhhhhh!

Anyway, here are some pictures of his right leg. This was taken before the veins were removed.

He had to have the leg rapped in ace bandages for seventy-two hours after the surgery. During that time he had to keep the leg elevated above his heart and take easy, ten minute walks once an hour.

They made twenty-four incisions to remove the veins.

He has to wear pretty stocking for a couple of weeks after the surgery.

I don't know which legs he's going for after the surgeries are completed.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALI!

I feel like I'm in a time machine with the switch permanently stuck on fast-forward. I can't believe little Ali is already 25 years old! This is how she is still supposed to look!

Happy Birthday, Ali!

Those Woodburys

I was thinking about what the man on my tour said about brothers and sisters from large polygamous families marrying because they might not realize they were siblings. I assured him that would never happen, but later I was thinking about other relatives intermarrying - like those Woodburys. Of course Jane and Scott are both descendants of Anson Call.

But it's not just Jane and Scott -

Brindy and Mom are both descendants of Perrigrine Sessions.

Besides that, Anson and Perrigrine are brothers-in-law, Perrigrine married two of Anson's sisters.

Add to that - Grandpa Ethan and Mom are double related through both William Woodbury and Joseph Bartlett.

I almost forgot, Dad and Ethan are also both descendants of Richard Warren

That explains a lot about how Jane and Scott's kids turned out.

I couldn't find a picture of David so I had a professional artist make an accurate drawing of him.

It kind of makes you wonder how Kim and Brindy's kids are going to turn out!
